Tally Ho
I had the privilege to spend some of my (misspent) youth in the shadow of the Tally Ho. It was a glorious place where 300 lbs sweaty South Texas working men took refuge at the end of a long day of waiting inline to dump their grain at Producers Mill (which I believe is now Interstate Grain Corporation). I remember the drivers would shack up there in the cold AC, with a few beers, a carton of cigarettes and if they were lucky a lady friend.
I had the opportunity to stay in the Tally Ho in 1990, it was not as nice as it is pictured in the attached picture postcard. Romney International Hotels still controls the property and you can read up on their history on their website.
Also, in case you're interested in mid-80's Corpus Christi grain elevator history, you can read the story about the 1981 elevator explosion at Public.

What is a Tapir?
I'm totally pissed. I just got back from CR and found the coolest animal in the world that I have never seen, but would like to. It's not every day that you learn of a new animal.
It's the Tapir. It's a horse, rhino, pig hybrid and it seems to have a bit of an elephant snout.
They are really cool looking. Check out the video as well as the still.

Thai Chicken & Shrimp Coconut Yellow Curry
Ktwn's mother came into town for some much needed mother/daughter time. The two did some shopping and I was asked to contribute one of ktwn's favorite foods. The Thai Chicken & Shrimp Coconut Yellow Curry.
A week prior, my friend Alex was discussing the artistry of Thai cooking. We concluded that you could add ALPO™ to coconut milk and it would still be awesome. However, here's a photo. Can you smell it through the internet. Mmmmmm Curry.

Super Conference
What about a super-conference made up USC, OK, TX, Ohio State, Bama, Nebraska, Florida, Oregon, Boise State, Notre Dame, LSU and Michigan. All the major media markets (except NYC) would get to see fantastic football and a huge payoff from the networks. Sure Tech and Auburn would not longer be able to recruit any decent talent but all long as the NCAA football is just going to be a money sport based on media dollars, lets do this right.
Also, let just get the major teams in the same division so the go 10 teams can play each other instead of the bullshit bowl game system.
Nebraska could substituted for Arizona State.

Beating the Tax Man
At 30 days since we were given notice of the tax bill for the Dixon house, I had my formal hearing before the tax board this morning. Well, it worked out well. Instead of the $16K reduction I was hoping to receive I only got $7K off. Either way, it's a victory.
During the hearing, the TCAD representative was stating his case and said, "this owner has had approximately the save value on her house for 3 years and has not bothered to protest the taxes before, why now?"
The chairman of the review board then thumbed through the packet I submitted, saw our marriage license and said, "it looks like the owner got a man around the house, and he took a closer look at your appraisal and got tired of you guys trying to pull this bullshit."
I simply nodded.

Life and Death of an American Car
The trunk on Ktwn's car quit latching, so today it was off to the junkyard. Two hours, two salvage yards and $25 later I was back in business.
I'd forgotten how much I enjoy going to places like this. I suppose some would be depressed by 1/4 acre of dead metal and plastic. But all I see are people. The people who drove these car off the lot when they were brand new. The last person who wrecked or sold it before it came to be here. The people who engineered, designed and built the cars and the now the people who come in with tools to extract even more miles and life from these rusting parts. I don't see it as a graveyard, but more of a coral of hopes and technology.
The best part of the whole thing is that now her trunk shuts and Ktwn's pretty happy with me.
